The two Orders of Knights Templars and
Knights Hospitallers were military Orders whose members were bound by
monastic vows, founded to protect the Holy Sepulchre and Christian pilgrims to
the Holy Land. They were given land in England to provide money to support
their cause. They built their own special form of monastery, or Commandery,
where they recruited new members and provided for the retirement of those past
fighting in Somerset at Templecombe and at Buckland, near Taunton; but
neither of the two Orders seem to have been much involved in local affairs.
