A BRIEF HISTORY OF SOMERSET

INTRODUCTION

Based on a Text by T J Hunt

The brief history of the county made available here is based on the text of T J Hunt's "Aspects of Somerset History", published in 1973 with illustrations by R R Sellman. Hunt was the leading Somerset historian of his time and his text is an expert thematic account of Somerset history. Inevitably, some aspects of his text are now out of date. In particular, Somerset's prehistory is now much more fully understood than when he wrote, and his text could take no account of the great changes which affected the county after 1973. It is planned to update the text in the near future. In the meantime, those interested in a modern account of Somerset archaeology should see " Somerset Archaeology: Papers to mark 150 Years of the Somerset Archaeological and Natural History Society", edited by C J Webster (Somerset County Council, 2000), ISBN 0-86183-346-5. Developments in the county since 1973 are briefly covered in the final chapter of "Somerset: the Millennium Book", edited by Tom Mayberry and Hilary Binding (Somerset Books, 2000), ISBN 0-86183-485-2.
