born 1929 Dulverton, parents Oliver and Ida. Father Master Butcher with brother, took over from Tommy Uppington in early 1920s. Uncle Wilf died of blood poisoning early 30s, auntie Olive died mid 1960s / family lived over shop / grandparents - mother's father stationmaster at Bickeigh and Exeter, paternal grandfather manager for Lord Ledislow at Lidney, Forest of Dean, Glos. Father's other brothers went to Australia / coming to Dulverton. [Back to top]

DELIVERY AREAS / 1947 WINTER / DELIVERING TO WITHYPOOL AND WINSFORD / FROZEN EXMOOR PONIES / CUSTOMERS COMING FIRST

[looks at notes] delivery area / delivering priority / winter of 47 - delivering to Withypool with Phil Hart (employee), meeting Les Butler from Exford at Folly Cross and Len How with grocers van / walking to Withypool for three weeks with Swiss sledge borrowed from Mrs Herbert at Pixton. Left everything at Rennie Blackmore's, PO in Withypool. Second two weeks could get to Winsford along valley but had to walk up Ash Lane. Frozen Exmoor ponies at Comers Cross. Customers came first. ran food shop, guest house and cafe in Lynmouth / Irving Medway died and Fred Fouracre and Tim Halsgrove took over butchers in Lynton / driving Dr Mold to Martinhoe in snow, walking down over Sid Dallyn's fields, and to Brendon, meeting Dick French driving sheep. [Back to top]
