This page explains how you can get a copy of a birth certificate. Somerset Registration Service holds records for births, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships which have occurred in the County since 1837.
Who can use it?
Anyone can apply for a copy certificate if they can provide the required information to enable a successful match with the records held, and pay the appropriate fee.
Please note there is an option to purchase a 'short' version of the certificate. This only offers the date, name and place of birth. These certificates are usually acceptable when applying, for example, for a school placement and other examples which do not bear legal status.
The 'full' version of the certificate additionally includes details of the parents, and in most cases this is the version required by banks, the passport office etc. when applicants seek to provide proof of identity. If in doubt you should not select the short version of the certificate, since both carry the same cost (see below).
How do I use it?
For births in Somerset you can apply online for a copy certificate by clicking the button above. Alternatively, you can apply in writing, including the appropriate payment to Certificate Services, Somerset Heritage Centre, Brunel Way, Norton Fitzwarren TA2 6SF. You should provide as much of the following information as possible about the entry you are seeking to enable us to identify the entry correctly. For a copy birth certificate, please provide:
- Name of child
- Date of birth
- Place of birth
We will search a minimum of 2 years either side of the date you have given.
What happens next?
Your certificate will be posted to the address submitted on your application.
How long does it take?
You should receive your copy certificate within 5 - 7 working days.
How much does it cost?
The fee for ordering a copy certificate is £10 each. (£10.50 payable to include postage and packing)
If the event occurred recently and is still in the current register, copy certificates cost £7. The register office which holds the records will be able to advise you further about which register the entry is in. Contact details for each office are available through the links below under "Where is it?".

You will not be charged if the entry cannot be found.
