It is predicted that, by 2026, increases in housing and jobs in the area could see Taunton growing to the size of Exeter. In order to compete with rival shopping centres, Taunton needs to make sure it can offer a safe and high quality shopping experience for pedestrians.
From 30 November 2009, the general public will be able to have their say about how traffic can be managed in the North Street area of Taunton to achieve this.
One proposal is that North Street, St James' Street and Hammet Street could be pedestrianised when the Taunton Third Way opens in winter 2010. This could see traffic removed from one of Taunton's busiest shopping areas for all or part of the day.
