Report unnecessary road signs

One of our promises in the Somerset County Plan is to remove unnecessary road clutter such as signs, lines on the road, bollards and railings.

  • Do you know of any road signs, lines, bollards or railings that are no longer needed?  For example, where a school has closed, but there is still a school warning sign for motorists in place.
  • Road signs that you believe are unnecessary and clutter the environment?
  • Or, a sign is displayed on a post when it could be sited on a street light column.

If so, we would like to hear from you.  You can 'Do it online'.

  • Click the 'Do it online' button and give us a description of the sign, for example, a cattle crossing sign
  • Give us the location of the sign along with a brief description, to help us locate it, for example, 'A38 opposite the turning for Silver Street'.
  • Give us the reason why you believe it should be removed.
  • Select the appropriate Somerset district (Mendip, Sedgemoor, South Somerset, Taunton Deane or West Somerset).
  • Click the 'Submit' button.

Who can use it?

Anyone can use this service to report unnecessary road signs.

How do I use it?

Click the 'do it online' button or contact us on 0845 345 9155.

What happens next?

We will look at all the suggestions we receive in line with the relevant laws and regulations and, where appropriate. we will remove the sign.

We will provide a monthly progress report on this web page showing number of suggestions received and number of signs removed.

Please understand that whilst we are grateful for your suggestions, due to officer time constraints we cannot enter into individual correspondence regarding these submissions, and as the Highway Authority our decision is final.

How long does it take?

Depending on the number of submissions received, likely budget reductions and the priority given to each road sign, this could take up to 12 months, so please be patient.

How much does it cost?

Depending on the type and location of the sign and whether it runs on an electricity supply will affect the budget required to remove the sign.

Laws and regulation

As the Highway Authority we provide signs in order to give information to the road user which is essential for keeping our roads safe and helping us to use the roads correctly.  Due to safety implications, signs have to be carefully regulated and must comply with all relevant laws and regulations.
