Waste planning policy in Somerset

Waste planning policy is outlined through a range of documents.  The main document for Somerset is the Somerset Waste Core Strategy, which was adopted by Somerset County Council in February 2013. It is part of the development framework for Somerset, along with a range of other documents such as the Somerset Minerals Plan, and district and borough local plans.

The Waste Core Strategy guides the County Council's approach to planning for sustainable waste management in Somerset until the year 2028. It covers all forms of waste including household, commercial, industrial and construction waste.

The Waste Core Strategy sets out the detailed environmental and other criteria against which we judge all applications for waste management facilities.

You can download the Waste Core Strategy from this website (on the right hand side, under 'information and resources'), or contact us for a paper copy.

Who can use it?

The Somerset Waste Core Strategy is of interest to anyone wanting to find out about how Somerset's waste will be managed in the future.

If you are looking for information on recycling or household collections of waste, please visit the Somerset Waste Partnership website a link to which can be found on the right.

What is covered?

In preparing the Waste Core Strategy, a large number of documents were used, written and referred to. Together these documents are known as the evidence base. Key documents from the evidence base which have informed the Waste Core Strategy are listed in the 'Information and Resources' section on the right; if you would like a copy of any of these documents then please contact us using the details in the 'contact' section.

General

The Waste Core Strategy is used to determine waste planning applications which are submitted to us by the Development Control team. It was written by the County Council's (minerals and waste) planning policy team. It is the responsibility of this team to formulate plans guiding how and where all types of waste produced in Somerset will be treated and disposed of. For more information, please contact the team.
