The proposal is to dual a 3 mile section of single carriageway between Sparkford and Ilchester.
Following an assessment process, 2 route options have been shortlisted :
- Option 1 – a dual carriageway that starts east of Podimore roundabout and follows the alignment of the existing A303 to Downhead. It would then move north before reverting to follow the route of the existing A303 in the direction of Hazlegrove. The route then re-joins the existing carriageway near Sparkford.
- Option 2 – a dual carriageway that starts east of Podimore roundabout before leaving the existing A303 to pass south east of Annis Hill. The new dual carriageway passes north of Steart Hill towards Hazlegrove, re-joining the existing dual carriageway near Sparkford.
Highways England launched a public consultation on 15 February 2017, which ran until 28 March 2017, for public and key stakeholders to comment on their proposals and identify any areas of concern or opportunities for further improvement.
