Apply to place temporary traffic lights on the road

If you want to place temporary traffic lights or stop/go boards on the public highway you must have a licence. This may be in addition to other licences required for your proposed works. Anyone can request a licence, but we usually receive requests from contractors in charge of the works.

Temporary traffic lights may be used for safeguarding the public and people at work.

You can apply for a licence using the 'Apply now' button below or by completing the Temporary Traffic Light Application Form in the Information and resources section of this page.

Each application costs £28.50 and this covers:

  • Administration

  • Review of submitted site traffic management plans

Where further details or officer time is required there may be an extra cost.

Apply now

Please read the application form carefully and include everything we need to process the application. The application may be delayed if we do not have enough information, (including maps).

Please include your payment with your application. (Please make cheques payable to Somerset County Council).

Please note - the time we take to process your application (10 working days) only begins when we receive a fully completed application.

We may contact you if we need any more information. The review is generally a desktop study of the potential impact and safety provided. Occasionally, we may carry out a site visit.

We may set conditions for the licence if we see any potential problems with the position or operation of the lights.

You will receive your licence by post, which will include the authorisation and a unique reference number.

Please note that we do not install or supply equipment.

You can view our streetworks register by appointment, free of charge, during normal working hours. Please contact us to arrange an appointment.
