Social Inclusion and Access
Group Manager - Jacky Bartholomew

The Social Inclusion and Access Group works to support schools in meeting the needs of those pupils with challenging behaviour and working with those at risk of exclusion. The Group has a responsibility to reduce exclusion, provide full time education for those permanently excluded and to raise attendance. It is working very closely with Education Development Service and Special Educational Needs to ensure a joint approach to the strategic priorities of attainment and social inclusion. Social Inclusion and Access includes the following services:
Pupil Support
This team works with schools and parent/carers to give advice and support on all aspects of exclusion from school and re-integration to another school place and/or alternative provision. It services and plays a part in the Panel for Excluded and Vulnerable Pupils.
Somerset Medical Tuition Service
This team works with pupils out of school for medical reasons, provides education in partnership with the school and gives advice and support to parent/carers. There are three education units in medical provision, at Musgrove Park Hospital, Yeovil Hospital and Orchard Lodge. There is also a virtual classroom which provides lessons for pupils in their own homes. The team manages the work of the tuition groups and individual tutors. For further information click here.
Pupil Referral Service
There are three centres for KS4, at Glastonbury, Bridgwater and Taunton, two centres for KS3, at Yeovil and Bridgwater and one KS2 centre at Bridgwater. These centres provide places for permanently excluded pupils with the focus on reintegration to a mainstream school or specialist provision. Spare capacity is used to offer purchased places to schools for pupils at risk of exclusion. Outreach work to schools is being developed for those pupils at risk. KS1 needs are being met through three LEA funded Nurture Groups. For further information - click here.
Education Social Work Service
The work of this service focuses on attendance issues, working with schools, parent/carers and pupils to keep children and young people engaged with education, using legal action and parenting contracts as appropriate. Links with Social Services are invaluable in meeting the needs of pupils and families. Work is carried out with pupils at risk of exclusion and their families. Systems to download attendance data from schools are supporting early intervention to support schools. For further information - click here.
