Overview and Scrutiny Work Programme

The principles of public scrutiny are to:

  • Provide a 'critical friend' challenge to executive policy-makers and decision-makers
  • Support and ensure the voice and concerns of local people and the wider community are heard
  • Assist in driving improvement in public services

The council has an 'Overview & Scrutiny' function comprising members who are not on the Executive Board. The Scrutiny Committee and its Sub-Committees meetings are usually open to the public and you are very welcome to attend. They are normally held in County Hall, Taunton and the planned meetings are shown here:

There is always an opportunity for public questions at the beginning of each meeting. You are also able to submit a petition, if the subject falls within the remit of the particular meeting. On certain occasions, members of the public will be invited to be actively engaged in the members’ discussions, as part of taking evidence on a scrutiny topic. However, if councillors need to discuss confidential information regarding an item on the agenda, the press and members of the public will be asked to leave the room during that part of the discussion.

We now publish a monthly work programme to give an indication of the likely subjects for discussion at scrutiny meetings.

Closer to the time of each meeting (normally a week prior) a full agenda and reports are published on our website and in libraries.

Community Governance provides and co-ordinates officer support to members on the Scrutiny Committee and its sub-committees. Please contact me if you would like to attend or require more information.
