5 minutes dadFive minutes Dad!

'Five Minutes Dad!' showcases the library as a place for Dads to discover books that they'll enjoy sharing with their families. Books can be borrowed for free and you can change them regularly or continue to borrow favourites.

5 minutes dadDads! Sharing a book is fun and the benefits are enormous!

  • Sharing a book doesn't take long. A little and often is enough to give a child a head start at school.
  • Reading aloud is the easiest way to talk to a baby before they have any language of their own.
  • Snuggling up is part of the magic of reading together and creates the perfect bond between parent and child.
  • Listening to stories provides children with 'new friends' - characters they learn to love.
  • Sharing a book provides the chance to take off into new worlds using the words that go with them.
  • Take time to explain new words and link the words to the pictures.
  • Children can understand stories that are beyond their own reading ability. Allow your child to interrupt and ask questions.
  • Hearing stories read aloud improves a child's ability to listen and increases attention span.
  • Allow children to make their own choices as well as guiding them towards books you think they'll enjoy.
  • Try to make time for reading every day. It will become something everyone can look forward to with pleasure.
  • Look for books with lots of repetition and rhyme. These are easy to read with enthusiasm and children love to be able to join in. Library staff will be pleased to help you choose.

Children love to revisit stories they enjoyed when they were younger. Let them read aloud their favourites to you for a change! They can even pretend to read the stories they know very well.
