Celebrating Somerset's Culture - Something to Declare
A Cultural Strategy for the County of Somerset
Following guidance from the Government Department of Culture, Media and Sport, Somerset has produced a Countywide Cultural Strategy. This document has been developed in partnership between the County Council, the District Councils of Mendip, Sedgemoor, South Somerset, Taunton Deane and West Somerset and Exmoor National Park Authority.
The strategy has been produced following a process of researching the cultural life of Somerset, consultation with residents of the county and comments from interested stakeholders in the county. We have included many comments received following a consultation period in March – May 2002. A number of comments reflected concern that some activities, organisations and cultural activities were not included in the Strategy. This is the case, not because they were of any less value to the culture of the county, but because of the limited space and the enormous range of cultural activity.
A full colour public summary of the strategy is being produced and will be available in the New Year.
We have tried to highlight and celebrate the many characteristics of Somerset’s culture that make it a distinctive place to live, work and visit. I hope you find the strategy both interesting and an enjoyable read.
