Cheddar Gorge with Figures Resting, by Samuel Jackson, c. 1825
Watercolour and bodycolour
Samuel Jackson (1794-1869) was the son of a Bristol merchant, and with his mentor Francis Danby became a key member of the group of artists known as the Bristol School. He built up a successful practice as a drawing master and excelled as a landscape artist, producing watercolours of great beauty and accomplishment.
This view of Cheddar Gorge is an outstanding example of his work, and presents a vividly romanticised image of one of England's most famous natural scenes.
