‘…. fire burn and cauldron bubble’
English Bronze Cooking Vessels

Roderick and Valentine Butler of Honiton created a remarkable collection of English bronze cooking vessels over a period of nearly 40 years. Somerset County Museums Service acquired the collection in 2004 with grant aid from the Heritage Lottery Fund, MLA/V&A Purchase Grant Fund, Friends of the Somerset County Museum and Somerset Industrial Archaeological Society. It is the largest and most representative such collection in existence and ranges in date from the medieval period to the 19th century. It is particularly rich in vessels made in Somerset, which, in the 17th century, was a leading centre of production nationally.
