Somerset Oral History Archive Project

An exciting new project has started to promote this important archive, to preserve it for future generations and make it more accessible. This has been made possible with the help of a grant of £47,900 from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The Somerset Oral History Archive consists of 480 recordings, and their associated transcripts, which explore the life of the people of Somerset during the twentieth century. The Friends of the Somerset Rural Life Museum and Somerset County Museums Service began work in this field in 1973 and are still adding to the collection today.

The archive covered many aspects of life in Somerset including:

  • Local crafts and industries
  • Village and town life
  • Agriculture
  • Customs and traditions
  • Recreation
  • Family and working life

The first phase of the project will involve digitising the whole of the archive by transferring the recordings currently stored on cassette tape and open reel, and the typed transcripts onto CD-ROM. This will secure the archive for future generations.

The second phase of the project will promote the archive and make it more accessible by:

  • Creating an online catalogue
  • Providing listening posts around the county
  • Creating a website about the archive including audio clips
  • Producing a resource pack for schools in partnership with Somerset Schools.
