A statue of John Short, well known as 'Yankee Jack' was unveiled on the Esplanade at Watchet recently. John, a Watchet man, was a renowned seaman and was known as a shanteyman because of his strong and resonant voice. Cecil Sharp recorded many songs sung to him by Yankee Jack and published them in one of his volumes of English Folk Shanteys.
The statue was commissioned by Watchet Market House Museum.
Pictured are Margaret Norman who formally unveiled the statue, Alan Herriot the sculptor, and Jack Binding the Chairman of the Museum Society.
