Somerset Remembers

There are over 900 war memorials within Somerset ranging in form from traditional style stone crosses to buildings, recreation grounds, gardens, benches, plaques and church fittings. Many of these have been recorded on the United Kingdom National Inventory of War Memorials, based at the Imperial War Museum, London. During 2005 details of all the known memorials were added to the Historic Environment Record. Anybody can now search for war memorials by location in any part of the county.

Teachers at the Vivary Park War memorial, Taunton

On Wednesday 27th April 2005 a teachers workshop was held, demonstrating how war memorials could be used in creative literacy activities at Key Stage 2. 11 teachers from schools around the county attended. The day started with a visit to a local memorial in Vivary Park, Taunton. During the afternoon talks were given on how to use archives and documentary sources related to memorials and the physical and historical aspects of memorials. Finally creative literacy consultant, Frances Burns, spoke on suggestions for cross curricular and creative literacy activities using aspects of war memorials. Each teacher present was presented with a resource pack, now available as a download

In the afternoon the children will be put into three groups. One group will be working on a drama with John French of the County Museum. Another group will be working with local poet James Crowden whilst a third group will be drawing and painting to create a large composite display for their school hall.
