Pollen Monitoring
The Community Protection Department provides daily
bulletins (from Monday to Friday) during the summer months of
June and July on the levels of grass pollen in the area.
The pollen monitoring service is carried out
on behalf of the National Pollen and Aerobiology Research
Unit (NPARU), which co-ordinates the National Pollen Network
in Britain - a system of 33 monitoring sites collecting
daily information on pollen counts.
The pollen trap, sited at County Hall in Taunton,
is used to monitor daily concentrations of grass pollen,
as this is the most important allergenic pollen type in
the United Kingdom, with 95% of sufferers affected by grass
pollen.
The results are collated into a data bank
and used by the NPARU to provide national forecasts for
the media, including: TV, radio, teletext, websites and
newspapers.
