| Biodiversity simply means the total variety of life on earth. It includes all living organisms, including species, ecosystems and ecological processes. Biodiversity is fundamental for the Earth's life support system. It provides basic natural services which mankind has always been able to take for granted, such as the provision of fresh water, fertile soil, clean air and stable weather systems. |
 |
| Over the past twenty five years, species have been disappearing in alarming numbers and many common species are also declining, this is due almost entirely to human activity. |
| At the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, Britain along with 150 other countries signed up to the Convention on Biodiversity, which is the committment to conserving and sustaining biodiversity on earth. Putting this commitment into practice the UK Goverment published "Biodiversity - The UK Action Plan". This provides a leading framework form which action can be taken at regional and local level. |
