| In these days of ever increasing intensification of farming practice, roadside verges hitherto thought of as just a maintenance problem for the local highway authority are being viewed as a vitally important countryside asset.
The roadside environment in Somerset like the landscape varies enormously and it is this diversity which offers such a wide range of habitats across the county. For example, sunken lanes in the south and west of the county are spectacular in the spring with a profusion of bluebells, foxgloves and campions contrasting with the dark green foliage of ferns.

To help maintain the delicate balance of habitats and to encourage species diversity, the Council intends to carry out a full-width late season cut every three years. Only a proportion of a particular areas will be cut each autumn to prevent damage to the pockets of flora and fauna that favour more advanced successional stages of vegetation cover. |

As an exception to the above, where areas of scrub exist and there are no constraints such as field access or ditches, areas will be left to form thickets which are important as both a habitat and a food source for many rodents and birds.
