“The Rural Review will establish just how Somerset County Council should be internally and externally focussed in order to respond effectively to the major drivers of change which will ask fundamental questions and offer major opportunities to our deeply rural county.” (Rural Review Mission Statement)
The Countryside Agency classifies 91% of Somerset as rural, making us the third most rural county in England. The rural nature of the county affects virtually every service we deliver. If we are to make a positive difference we need to take account of recent changes in rural policy at national and regional levels.
The purpose of the review is to examine a series of key policy questions in relation to a set of opportunities and challenges. The answers will provide recommendations and guidance on changes to policy, internal architecture and resources. The goal is to organise the County Council's policy and delivery structures in the most effective and efficient way in the light of current and future likely demands.
As part of the Rural Review process, a number of workshop events were held with participants from a whole variety of organisations. At each event, speakers on a series of themes covering communities, governance, economy, agriculture and the environment were followed by debate and discussion. The concerns and priorities coming out of the workshops will help shape future County Council policy and structures for rural issues.
