Highways

The Highways, Planning and Transport Division is responsible for providing a comprehensive and integrated package of services from Regional and Strategic Planning through to Highways Maintenance.

The Division aims to ensure that a consistent "joined up" policy led approach guides work across the whole range of Highways, Planning and Transport Services, including those provided through the partnering contract with Atkins.

The Division aims to contribute to the quality of life for the communities of Somerset through:-

• Ensuring Somerset's voice is heard and its concerns addressed through the Regional Planning process
• Protecting the environment by planning for the sustainable provision of sufficient homes and employment opportunities, at appropriate locations through the
• Structure Plan process
• Promoting safety, access, and travel choice in transport, through the Local Transport Plan (LTP)
• Regulating the development and operation of the Minerals and Waste Management industries in Somerset through the planning control and Local Plan processes
• Managing the Rights of Way network to promote access, and recreation oportunities
• Managing the County's highway network and transport systems to promote safety and access
