Network Safety

Somerset County Council and its partners are investing in measures to make the roads safer.  The investment is made on a number of fronts including Road Safety Education, training and publicity campaigns together with physical measures on the road designed to reduce accidents and casualty severity through Local Safety Schemes.  In addition other measures, such as Safety Cameras, are used to enable targeted enforcement (by the police) of traffic regulation (e.g. speed limits).  All of these measures are used to achieve casualty reduction and there are Government targets for this which the County Council, and its partners, are actively pursuing.  The Government actively supports and encourages this work by providing capital funding through the Local Transport Plan process. Accident data can be supplied to members of the public and organisations upon request at a nominal fee to cover administrative costs.

In addition to actively working to reduce the number of people injured the Network Safety Team is working with schools in encouraging travel to school by safe and sustainable modes. This is achieved by schools developing School Travel Plans with the support of our Safe Routes to School project team.
