Northern Inner Distributor Road - Taunton

Northern Inner Distributor Road - Taunton

The Northern Inner Distributor Road (NIDR) is a new highway scheme designed to relieve congestion in the Greenway Road and Priorswood Road areas of Taunton as well as providing access to substantial areas of brown field development land at Taunton West Goods Yard, Taunton East Goods Yard and the Firepool area. The proposal is for a new road linking Staplegrove Road in the west to Priory Avenue in the east.

In 2004 a review of the Taunton Transport Strategy was undertaken. This review highlighted the need to provide the appropriate infrastructure to enable Taunton to expand. The proposals were then developed in conjunction with the Taunton Vision to ensure that the proposals maximised opportunities for the redevelopment of brown field sites within the Firepool and Goods Yards areas whilst at the same time delivering benefits in terms of improved safety and reduced congestion in the Greenway Road and Priorswood Road areas.

These proposals have recently received approval from the Department for Transport, which now enables the development of the schemes to be progressed.
