Transport

North West Taunton Package

The North West Taunton Package (NWTP), also known as Silk Mills, is a major transport scheme that includes a new bridge over the railway at Silk Mills and a 600 space park and ride site to the south of the railway.

The A3065 currently traverses the railway line at a level crossing, it is estimated that the barriers are currently in the closed position for some 25% of the day, which causes significant delays to road users and reduces route attraction. Experts predict the bridge will reduce the increase in traffic congestion by up to 30% at peak times.

The construction of the Silk Mills Road Bridge will serve a number of purposes:

a) Reduce delays to road users making the route more attractive, thereby reducing the number of vehicles travelling through the town centre.

b) Provide easier access to the proposed Park & Ride site to the south of the railway line.

c) Encourage buses to utilise the A3065/A38 corridor to gain access to the town.

d) Enable further pedestrianisation measures to be taken in the town centre.

It is planned that the bridge will open to traffic by Autumn of this year. Here is an artists impression of what the bridge might look like:

Work is proceeding on programme with the majority of the earth works now complete and construction of the Information Building is now underway.

At the end of September / early October traffic will be diverted over the new bridge this will allow work to be completed on the junctions at either end of the new section of road.
A raffle has been held by St Margaret's Hospice to mark the occasion and to raise funds for the Hospice the winner will be the 'first person to cross the bridge'.
