Welcome to the Natural Environment Strategy (NES) website Natural Environment Strategy logo.

What do we mean by ‘natural environment’ and why a strategy?
A common definition of ‘the natural environment’ is; ‘the earth’s surface and atmosphere, including all living organisms as well as the air, water, soil and other resources necessary to sustain life.’

We believe that Somerset is a wonderful place to live, work and visit, with stunning countryside, a wonderful coastline and outstanding natural beauty.

With so many challenges to the natural environment, including climate change, the NES seeks to provide a clear and cohesive way forward for the future of the whole of Somerset’s natural environment.

We are working with key organisations and individuals to address a number of issues, including increasing statutory responsibilities and unclear government policy and funding. By doing so we will form a clearer view of SCC’s role within the natural environment and establish how best to direct our already limited resources.

The strategy will provide focus for SCC’s role in the protection and enhancement of Somerset’s natural environment, whilst balancing economic, social and environmental regeneration needs.
