The Fleet Department:
- Hold Somerset County Councils Operator Licences for both Goods and PSV Vehicles.
- Manage specification, procurement & disposal of vehicles for all Directorates with in Somerset County Council.
- Manage the County tyre contract.
- Schedule inspections, services, & MOT for all fleet vehicles.
- Carry out vehicle safety inspections, on contractors vehicles at schools, working along side vehicle inspectors from VOSA (Vehicle & Operator Services Agency).

- Carry out safety inspections on all school/PTA owned minibuses twice a year to ensure legal compliance.
- Vet any new operators who wish to be considered for Somerset County Council contracts.
- Issue section 19 permits on behalf of the Traffic Commissioners to all SCC departments, schools, & partners who require them.
- Manage all CRB checks for contracted drivers, escorts, and voluntary groups.
- Provide training for wheelchair handling and securing and tail lift operation.
- Manage driver & escort monitoring.
- Carry out risk assessments on all special needs transport.

- Supply & control special needs equipment (car seats, booster seats special harnesses, wheelchair restraints etc)
- Provide advice to service users on Road Transport Law & Legislation issues.
- Work with Ford Motor Company, BP, & The Imperial College London, on the bio fuel project.
- Manage the issuing and invoicing of vehicle fuel cards.
- Administer car lease scheme.
