Planning Responsibilities within Somerset

Within Somerset, most planning applications are sent to, processed and decided by the District and Borough Councils, however, the County Council are responsible for determining certain types of  applications which are:

  • Applications for the Council’s own properties and services such as schools, libraries, social service buildings, County owned farms and new roads;
  • Mineral extraction and ancillary development, e.g. quarries, peat-workings and processing plants;
  • Waste disposal developments, e.g. landfill sites, incinerators and recycling facilities.

Planning applications for these types of developments are processed by the Planning Control Team, which is part of the Environmental Management & Regeneration Division headed by Paula Hewitt.  The Environmental Management Group includes responsible for, Rights of Way Definitive Map, Rights of Way Maintenance, Land Charges and the Gypsy and Traveller Service as well as monitoring conditions imposed on planning consents and investigating complaints about alleged breaches of conditions or unauthorised activities.

All other developments, including residential/commercial properties, building conversions, extensions and Listed Building consents are the responsibility of the District/Borough Councils.
