Guide for Dog Owners and Walkers

Did You know?

Dogs and owners out and about

.....Somerset's Rights of way network provides you with thousands of kilometres of footpaths, bridleways and byways for you to walk your dog. If all of Somerset's Rights of way were laid end to end they would stretch over 6000km from Taunton across the Atlantic to the east Coast of America?........

....In Somerset, the second most popular reason why people use public rights of way is to walk their dog

....Walking keeps you and your dog happy and healthy. Walking only 30 minutes a day makes you feel good, gives you more energy, helps to reduce stress, can lower blood pressure and helps keep your heart in good working order?......

....There are over 7.5 million dogs living in this country and they produce over 10,000 tonnes of poo a week - enough to fill 4 olympic sized swimming pools....

Many of Somerset's Public Rights of way cross fields used by farmers to grow crops or graze their animals. Unfortunatley, we do recieve complaints about irresponsible Dog Owners that don't clear up after their dog or let them chase people or livestock and disturb wildlife.

We've teamed up with a host of partners including Somerset's Dog Warden Teams, the National Farmers' Union and the Country Land and Business Association and produced a guide that explains, by following a few simple common sense steps, you and your dog can enjoy Somerset's beautiful countryside.

The guide explains:

  • Why it's important to clear up after your dog
  • Why it's important to keep your pet under close control
  • How you can take part in the Kennel Club's Good Citizen Dog Scheme
  • What to do if you're surrounded by livestock while out walking your dog; and
  • How to contact your local dog warden teams.
