What are we doing?
During 2004 Somerset County Council undertook a review of the transport strategy for Yeovil in order to develop a clear set of transport priorities for inclusion within the next countywide Local Transport Plan (LTP) which is due to be submitted to the Government in 2005.
The study followed on from the Yeovil Community Review of Transport (YCRT) - a consultive process run by a panel of local people that sought to establish the transport needs and aspirations for the town which published its findings and recommendations in 2002.
The study has looked in detail at the current demand for transport in Yeovil and has assessed the level of service offered by public transport and the road network. A complex transport model has been developed using data from a series of traffic surveys carried out around Yeovil in 2002. The model provides the tool for us to understand future traffic conditions and has provided a means of testing schemes to improve the transport system. These schemes have been brought together as a strategy that seeks to address future issues.
What are we trying to achieve?
The following objectives for the new transport strategy have been identified:
• |
Provide a transport system that accommodates the planned expansion for Yeovil; |
• |
Assist economic performance by ensuring that congestion does not increase to unacceptable levels by: |
1 |
Improving accessibility to maintain and improve upon the current high levels of walking and cycling; |
2 |
Creating measures to improve and maximise the effectiveness of the public transport system; and |
3 |
Providing targeted infrastructure improvements to tackle congestion hotspots. |
• |
Improve safety for all road users; and |
• |
While protecting and, if possible, enhancing the natural and built environment |
The implementation of the strategy elements highlighted at the top of this page are all subject to securing the necessary level of funding allocated through the LTP process.
