The strategy proposes the following measures:
|
• |
Support the implementation of Controlled Parking Zones; |
|
• |
Ensure parking supply is adequate after development of existing car parks (windfall sites); |
|
• |
Support the introduction of Decriminalised Parking Enforcement (DPE); and, |
| |
• |
Recommend increases to parking charges to deter car usage, particularly by commuters. |
The strategy supports the introduction of controlled parking (residents’ parking schemes) in the zones already identified for implementation and to consider further expansion as appropriate.
With development possible at a number of car parks in central Yeovil it is important to ensure that the parking supply is adequate for future demand.
The strategy supports the introduction of DPE that would give control of parking enforcement to South Somerset District Council.
Long stay parking charges in Yeovil are relatively cheap compared to other large towns with an average charge of £1.50p. Parking charges are a powerful tool to change travel behaviour and so the strategy recommends that all day parking charges should be no cheaper than the equivalent cost of travel by bus.
