The rationale that has been followed in developing the highway strategy is as follows:
| |
• |
To reduce delays and journey times across the network; |
| |
• |
To distribute traffic more 'evenly' and efficiently across the network; and |
| |
• |
To reduce traffic on unsuitable routes |
Signalisation of major roundabouts
| |
• |
A30 Queensway/A3088 Lysander Road 'Police Station' roundabout; |
| |
• |
A30 Queensway/Reckleford 'Hospital' roundabout; and |
| |
• |
A37 ILchester Road/A358 Mudford Road 'Fiveways' roundabout |
By 2011 the large 'at-grade' roundabouts on the A30 and A37 will accommodate significant delays that will contribute to unbalanced flows on the approaches. This will lead to the reassignment of traffic off the classified road network onto unsuitable roads. Signalisation will increase capacity at the roundabouts and will better balance flows on the approaches. It will also offer opportunities to incorporate safe pedestrian/ cycle crossing facilities at these junctions.
Access from the east
| |
• |
Traffic signals at the Sherborne Road/ Lyde Road junction; and |
| |
• |
Ban the right turn from Sherborne Road into St Michael's Avenue |
In order to give priority back to traffic travelling along the A30 and to regulate flows along Sherborne Road it is proposed to signalise the existing A30 Sherborne Road / Lyde Road junction which would also provide an opportunity to install safe pedestrian / cycle crossing facilities, and to ban the right turn into St Michael’s Avenue.
For Reckleford gyratory, refer to the Publications website link Public Exhibition Board – Sherborne Road / Reckleford gyratory.
Improved access to town centre (via Market Street)
| |
• |
Traffic signals at A30 Reckford/ Market Street junction (right in/right out). |
To improve access to and from the town centre and to relieve congestion encountered along Middle Street and Wyndham Street it is proposed to create an alternative more direct route to and from the bus station (bus priority measure) and town centre car parks by installing an ‘all movement’ junction with integrated pedestrian / cycle crossing facilities.
Improvements to northern route
| |
• |
Roundabout at A359 Mudford Road/Lyde Road junction; |
| |
• |
Roundabout at A359 Mudford Road/Combe Street Land junction; |
|
• |
Widen west and east arms of A37 Ilchester Road roundabout; and |
| |
• |
Reconfigure double mini-roundabout at Brimsmore. |
With the proposed key site developments at Lyde Road, Thorne Lane and Lufton it is expected that the route along the northern fringe of the town will develop further into a key route across Yeovil. Significant delays are forecast at the above junctions and therefore the proposed improvements will ease traffic flow along this route.
Traffic Management
| |
• |
Extend existing 20mph zone in the north-east of Yeovil to cover the whole area north of A30 Sherborne Road, west of Lyde Road and east of Mudford Road. |
Increased congestion on major roads will lead to motorists seeking routes along unsuitable residential roads. This is forecast to be a particular problem in the north-east of Yeovil. To alleviate this the strategy proposes that the whole area is designated a 20mph zone. This would be an extension to the existing zone along and adjacent to St Michael’s Avenue.
Junction Optimisation Strategy
Somerset County Council will undertake a junction optimisation strategy for all signalised junctions within the town, particularly the SCOOT system along Lysander Road and the Reckleford gyratory, to ensure maximum efficiency and synchronisation.
