To encourage people to travel by other means than the car it is important that there are attractive alternatives. The strategy recognises that the car will continue to be the main mode of travel for people in Yeovil but recommends a series of measures to enhance the town’s public transport system.
Bus station, town centre and roadside infrastructure
| |
• |
Improve physical environment of bus station, information and signage; and |
| |
• |
Improve bus information, maps, signage, raised kerbs and walking routes to/from stops. |
Improve accessibility
| |
• |
Better penetration of residential areas; |
|
• |
Bus services operating on 'day one' to/from new developments; and |
| |
• |
Additional services to/from employment areas. |
Service Frequency and Reliability
| |
• |
Enhancing service frequencies to meet local authority targets; |
|
• |
Enhancing evening services; |
|
• |
Little scope for effective bus priority measures (although opening of Market Street junction offers possibilities); and, |
| |
• |
Running buses through the country park is not recommended. |
The above measures would be delivered in Yeovil in the form of a Quality Bus Partnership (longer term it would planned to introduce a Quality Contract (subject to the outcomes from the Passenger Transport Strategy Review); through the Travel planning process; and through an increased level in local funding (also subject to the outcomes from Passenger Transport Strategy Review).
Rail stations: Yeovil Junction and Yeovil Pen Mill
| |
• |
Improve bus links between Yeovil Junction and Yeovil Pen Mill with guaranteed interchange (branded service); |
|
• |
Improve signage between platforms and bus stop; and |
| |
• |
Improve information. |
Although Yeovil has two railway stations there is only modest demand for rail travel in Yeovil and it has little effect on travel in the town centre. There have been proposals to allow interchange between Yeovil Junction and Yeovil Pen Mill by allowing trains to run between the stations. This concept is supported by the strategy although this is a scheme that is more likely to be delivered at a national / regional level rather than through the Somerset Local Transport Plan process.
