Further improvements to walking and cycling routes around the town will be implemented. A proposed pedestrian and cycle network has been developed encompassing both safe on-road and traffic-free cycle paths covering the town as well as the new large developments at Lufton, Thorne Lane, Lyde Road and Bunford. A summary of some of the infrastructure improvements is given below:
Walking / Cycle Routes (the natural topography within the town promotes the use of level west to east routes rather than hillier north to south routes):
| |
• |
Creating a route from the Lyde Road area to the town centre (north and parallel to Sherborne Road); |
| |
• |
Providing an off road alternative to Preston Road (north of the airfield). This has already been identified within the LTP programme; |
|
• |
Providing cycle segregation along Preston Grove; |
|
• |
Creating a northern route connecting Larkhill Road to Stiby Road and on to Glenthorne Avenue; |
|
• |
Ensuring that major key site developments (at Thorne Lane, Lufton, Lyde Road and Budford) create a significant number of footway/cycle links to the existing network, as well as accomodating a comprehensive routing system within those sites; |
|
• |
Enhancing the subways at 'Hospital' roundabout and West Hendford; and |
| |
• |
Extending the existing programme of dropped crossings. |
Walking/Cycle Crossings:
| |
• |
Construction of a toucan crossing along the A30 Sherborne Road to link Pen Mill railway station to the country park (already identified and included in this year's LTP programme); |
| |
• |
Providing a toucan crossing at the bottom of Hendford Hill |
|
• |
Providing cycle priorities at the junction of the Lyde Road/A30 Sherborne Road (as part of the proposed traffic signals); |
|
• |
Providing cycle priorities at Fiveways roundabout; |
|
• |
Providing a toucan crossing along Bundford Lane and Western Avenue in the vicinity of the ASDA roundabout |
|
• |
Providing pedestrian phases at existing (e.g. Preston Road/ Larkhill Road junction) and new traffic signal controlled junctions; and, |
| |
• |
Deter random crossing ('jaywalking') of A30 Reckleford; |
In addition to the above measures Somerset County Council will promote cycling as a mode of transport through the production of a cycle map for Yeovil and will undertake targeted marketing in areas currently served by good facilities. It is also planned to undertake surveys capturing data on current walking / cycling usage, provision and infrastructure, accident analysis and a survey of non-cyclists (to better understand the ‘barriers’ to cycling).
