Cycling Safely

 Basic Safety Tips

   • Be roadworthy - make sure your bike is fit for the road, that you have a bell, and that your lights work.
   • Be visible - wearing bright clothes, particularly high visibility sashes or jackets with reflective material can make a huge difference, especially at night.
   • Wear a helmet - some people don’t like them, but they increase your visibility, they reduce the risk of a head injury in the unfortunate event of an accident, and in the winter they can help to keep you warm!  It may not be very ‘cool’, but think about your safety, not your image.
 • Carry wet weather gear - most people who don’t cycle regularly think it rains all the time. In fact the chance of getting wet on a typical 10 minute journey is less than 1 in 50! Try and always carry lightweight rain gear in your bags, preferably brightly coloured with reflective strips.
   • Take care with luggage - there is a wide variety of baskets, racks and special pannier bags available. It is worth investing in a proper set up as this will increase your balance, safety and comfort.
