 All Cycle Routes and Facilities
in Somerset will be Signed

Often special road markings will show cyclists where to go. Cycle lanes and facilities may be coloured red. When you are cycling look out for the following signs and road markings:

Advisory Cycle Lanes

Mandatory Cycle Lanes

Shown by a dashed white line on the outside of the cycle lane: motorists are advised to keep out.

Shown by a solid white line: motorists must not enter the cycle lane.

Cycle Routes

Cycle Tracks

A rectangular cycle sign shows cycle routes where they are on carriageways; the same sign is used for advisory cycle lanes.

Are for cycles only and are marked by a cycle on a blue circular sign.

Segregated Shared Use Paths

Shared Use Paths

A segregated shared use path is one which has some form of physical separation distinguishing the cyclist and pedestrian areas - usually a white line, a raised white line or a kerb.

A shared use path is one that can be used by cyclists as well as pedestrians. On such paths, cyclists should always give way to pedestrians.

Cycle Markings

Advanced Stop Lines

A logo is used as a surface marking in a variety of locations to direct and assist cyclists, as well as a warning to other road users.

Enables cyclists to position themselves safely at the front of other traffic at lights.

Toucan Crossings

Bus Lanes

These are signalled controlled crossings similar to Pelican Crossings that are shared by both cyclists and pedestrians.

Cyclists are allowed in all bus lanes in Taunton.

Contra-Flow Cycle Lanes

No Cycling

Enables cyclists to legally travel the wrong way up a one-way street.

Some paths or sections of route are specifically designated as 'No Cycling'; these are either shown by the circular red bordered 'No Cycling' sign or the 'Cyclists Dismount'. Please obey these - they are normally provided for cyclists' or pedestrians' safety.
