Pen Mill Pedestrian/Cycle Enhancement Scheme

Pen Mill Pedestrian/Cycle Enhancement Scheme
Work has now commenced on the much-anticipated Pen Mill pedestrian/cycle enhancement scheme.  The project involves the construction of a 3.5m wide segregated pedestrian/cycle ramp extending from the east side of the A30 to Pen Mill station approach road.  This will replace the existing narrow footpath and steep steps.  A signal controlled crossing on Sherborne Road will be provided connecting the new ramp to the existing Country Park cycle route into the town centre.

The objectives of the scheme are to:
   • Provide safe crossing facilities for pedestrians, cyclists and people with disabilities wishing to cross Sherborne Road;
   • Improve access to Pen Mill rail station; and
   • Complete a safe, convenient and pleasant off-road route from the Camborne Grove/Lyde Road area to the town centre.  This forms part of the larger cycle/pedestrian route from the west side of Yeovil.
Tim Carroll, Portfolio Holder for Transport said: “This has been a fairly frustrating process in trying to achieve this.  It is the vital missing link between the east side of town, the station and the town centre.

“In addition there was a real safety problem for pedestrians and others trying to cross Sherborne Road at this point, which will now be addressed in the design.

“We are also very conscious that Sherborne Road is obviously a major route into the town and the design should minimise disruption to traffic flow.  We have achieved this with the use of a toucan crossing, which will only stop the traffic when pedestrians or cyclists wish to use the crossing.”

The enhancement scheme has been under consideration for many years.  Much time and effort has been spent by Somerset Highways negotiating with landowners.  The scheme has been particularly difficult and complex to bring to fruition due to land negotiations and the specialist construction technique required to build the ramp.  However, thanks to final agreement being reached between the landowners, Network Rail and South Somerset District Council, construction is now underway.

The scheme, which will be constructed by Atkins Network, will take approximately five months to complete.  Night-time working will ensure that disruption to the flow of traffic along the busy Sherborne Road will be minimised.
