Some schools operate different start dates for children entering reception classes, to help children settle smoothly into school. This is known as "staggered entry".
Schools will produce a clear statement about their September entry arrangements and organise visits and "stay and play" taster sessions for children and their parents, so that children can start school life in a positive way and that parents can make arrangements for their care over the four week staggered entry period.
The key points in any arrangements are:
-
All children to be attending five part-time sessions by the end of the 4th week of the Autumn Term;
-
All children to either be attending full-time or have an agreed plan for full-time attendance by the end of the first half term;
-
The detailed programme of attendance for the four week staggered period should be as simple as possible and build toward full-time attendance in a way that avoids different arrangements on different days of the week.
Staggered entry arrangements should also be available for children whose parent has opted to defer their entry until the Spring Term 2009. An entry plan should be agreed with parents over as short a period as is appropriate for the child's needs.
