Somerset Music – An Introduction

Somerset Music is the County Council’s music service.

With our network of 90 visiting instrumental tutors, we provide instrumental and voice tuition for about 6,000 pupils in schools across Somerset. We were amongst the first music services in the county to offer Music Technology. Our Wider Opportunities Project makes high quality tuition available to primary school pupils. We also give curriculum support to schools if requested. Low cost instrument hire is available to any of our pupils who need it.

Somerset Music has links with music centres throughout the county which offer ensemble experiences at a local level. We also deliver a variety of workshops and playing days such as the Advanced String Groups.

There are three County Groups organised and supported by Somerset Music. This includes the County Youth Concert Band, the County Youth Choir and the County Youth Orchestra. Other performance opportunities are available at county level such as the Christmas Celebration Concert at Wells.

Somerset Music is linked to a range of other art and music providers such as JUMPS (Joined Up Music for People in Somerset), Spaeda (Somerset Partnerships Art Educations Agency) and the Federation of Music Services.

Somerset Music was an early signatory of the Music Manifesto in 2004 and is currently involved in a Music Manifesto pathfinder project, an innovative and collaborative project developing music education hubs. Somerset Music supports the achievement of first access for all young people, deepening and broadening interest and skills, identifying and nurturing talent, developing a world-class workforce and improving support structures.

Somerset Music aims to make music available to as many students as possible.
