Special Educational Needs (SEN) Group

Montage of Photographs

This group aims to support learners in fulfilling their potential by meeting their special educational needs, in accordance with the SEN Code of Practice. The SEN Group aims to ensure that such learners are provided with equal opportunities and access to education. The services cover the age range from birth to 19 years and work in partnership with schools, families, other educational services, external agencies and the voluntary sector.

The services within the SEN Group are –

  1. Educational Psychology Service (including communication resource bases and Portage)
  2. Parent Partnership
  3. SEN Casework Team
  4. Specialist Intervention Services, which comprise:
  • Sensory Support Service (Sensory & Vision)
  • Physical Impairment and Medical Support Service
  • Visual Impairment Service

While maintaining their professional identity to ensure specialist skills in the respective areas, the services work together to develop a quality multi-professional service to children, young people, schools and carers.

A key feature of the Group is that SEN support services work together in 3 multi-professional teams, placed strategically across the county. Each school has a particular link person from each service. This provides a sound base for developing integrated local service delivery and good inter-agency links. Within each service are also personnel who have developed highly specialist knowledge in particular SEN areas and these are used to support pre schools, schools and families as required, across Somerset.

Please see the link to Somerset Information Exchange (SiX) opposite for further information relating to SEN.
