Support is available for most students studying a designated course of HE. Normally the course must be undertaken at a publicly funded institution in the UK but some courses at private establishments also qualify for support.
Support with living costs for eligible students starting their courses in 2006/2007 comes in the form of a student loan and a student grant. These elements of support are income assessed (means tested). In addition, non means-tested loans are available for tuition fee costs. There is also support in the form of grants for specific students, for example, those with childcare responsibilities and those with a disability.
You can apply online for the above support with effect from 19th April 2006. Go to www.studentsupportdirect.co.uk for further information and to access the online application facility.
Alternatively, you can submit a paper application form to your Local Authority (LA). If you are currently attending a Somerset school or college, you may obtain a Higher Education student finance application pack (including the paper form) from them. If you live in Somerset, and you are not currently attending a Somerset school or college, you may obtain an application pack from Somerset Student Finance by ringing the Children & Young People's Team at Somerset Direct on 0845 3459122. A copy of the form and relevant guides can also be downloaded from the Student Finance Direct website - Forms and Guides .
