The ethnic minority population, including White minority groups of Somerset has more than doubled over the last ten years from 1.3% to 2.93%. Chinese is the highest ethnic population according to the Census 2001 but it is estimated that Romany Gypsy is highest - the problem is that no official recording was made during the Census 2001 and yet Romany Gypsy is a recognised ethnic group by law (Race Relations Act, 1976).
