Somerset County Council, SCS and Somerset Food Links - Food Pilot Project

Local Food Produce for SCS Catering in Somerset Schools Project - Phase 2

Somerset County Services (SCS) and Somerset Foodlinks are working in partnership with Somerset County Council to provide locally sourced food products for the SCS Catering Service.

This was first introduced as a pilot project for the Somerset Coast area in October 2004 – March 2005. The details of this pilot project is summarised in the ‘Local Food in Somerset Schools – Report on a Pilot Project’ (see link to 'Summary Report Document' below ).

The Pilot Project work resulted in opportunities being identified to further develop a more sustainable and localised food chain for school catering in the County, and in recommendations to take up those opportunities.

Somerset Foodlinks were successful in obtaining funding for the second phase of the project identified from the pilot project, to continue to work with SCS and Somerset County Council as the pilot project partners to extend this project to schools in other areas in Somerset, to further develop a more sustainable and localised supply chain and to introduce healthy, nutritious local food in to those schools.
