The following information is designed to give you an introduction to the wide range of services provided by the Fostering Service within Somerset Children’s Social Care, and to show how you can help us have a positive impact on a child's life.
We are looking for people who can foster children who need short term, intermediate and long term placements. We need more foster carers to look after teenagers, sibling groups, children and young people with disabilities or who can support a child who is living at home with regular breaks, or young people leaving or who have left care.
We are always trying to recruit more foster carers and stepping stones’ providers so we can give the children and young people we care for more placement choice, suited to their own individual needs. This would enable us to keep children living in their communities, enabling them to maintain family contact, friendships, clubs/hobbies and continued school attendance where this is deemed to be safe and the right decision for the individual child.
Foster carers come from all sorts of backgrounds throughout Somerset. They are special people who are committed to opening their homes and families to care for children who are in distress.
At any one time there are in excess of 350 children being looked after by Somerset Children's Social Care, three quarters of these are with foster carers.
We understand that deciding to foster is not an easy decision. We are happy to talk to you if you have general questions or specific queries.
With your support we can really make a difference in the life of a child or young person.
