Being Abused Being Abused


What is abuse?

Abuse is when someone hurts you or treats you badly
There are different kinds of abuse

Physical Abuse

Is when someone hurts you
When someone hits you
When someone kicks you
When someone burns you
When someone pushes you around

Sexual Abuse

Is when someone touches your body or your private parts in a way you do not like.
Or when they make you touch them or kiss them when you do not want to.

Emotional Abuse

When people tease you
When people say bad things to you
When people hurt your feelings
When people threaten you

Financial Abuse

When someone is taking your money or things without you saying it is OK

Neglect

When people who should be helping you do not look after you
They must make sure you have enough food
They must make sure you are warm
They must make sure you are safe
They must take you to the doctors if you are poorly

Discrimination

When people treat you badly because you have a disability
When people treat you badly because you and a different colour skin
When people treat you badly because you have a different religion

Where does abuse happen?

Abuse can happen anywhere.
It could happen:

  • In the street
  • At home
  • At a friend’s house
  • Where you work
  • At a day centre
  • At college
  • Somewhere you spend your free time

Some of the people who might abuse you:

  • A relative, someone in your family
  • A member of staff
  • Someone at church
  • Someone where you live
  • A neighbour
  • A stranger
  • Another person with learning disabilities

Abuse is always wrong
If you are being abused it is not your fault
No one should do these things to you

If you are being abused you should tell someone you trust

These are some people you could tell:

  • Someone in your family
  • A friend
  • A member of staff or your keyworker
  • A social worker
  • An advocate
  • An inspector
  • The police

They should take you seriously
If you tell someone and they do not believe you or try to help you, you can tell someone else
