Mind the Gap is a two year action research project by The Norah Fry Research Centre in partnership with the key agencies in Somerset. The project is funded by the Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities, and is based on the good practice that already exists in transition support.
The research is designed to improve the support for young people with learning disabilities and mental health needs, as they move into adulthood. The project recognises that there is a high incidence of mental health issues among young people with learning disabilities, and aims both to explore those issues and also to assist the Connexions advisors in Somerset in enabling these young people to access prompt, appropriate and sensitive support. The project has focussed on approaches to emotional well being and support for family carers.
The research is almost complete and the workshop's aims were to: report on the outcomes; publicise the materials developed which can be used by agencies supporting young people; and plan how to take forward the recommendations of the research in Somerset.
