Volunteering in Somerset

Somerset County Council values a group of people who offer their services as volunteers.  There are many things for them to be involved in.  These include:

  • Being able to listen to people
  • Joining in group activities with older people, people with disabilities, and young people
  • Working with young children in a crèche or playgroup
  • Sharing in social activities with people with learning disabilities
  • Helping at day centres for frail or isolated older people
  • Providing transport so that people can get out for a break

The involvement of volunteers provides extra support and can make all the difference.

Volunteers help to extend the quality and scope of the support for many people we work with.  Many volunteers tell us they get as much out of volunteering as they put in. Volunteers can gain new skills, grow in confidence, make new friends, and at the same time do something worthwhile.  Some volunteers use volunteering as a way to gain experience and confidence to help them get a paid job.
