The Best Value User Satisfaction Survey was sent to a random sample of 3,500 households in September 2006 to determine how residents feel about the level of public services they receive in Somerset. This survey is undertaken every three years.

The data cover overseas nationals allocated a National Insurance Number (NINo) on the National Insurance Recording System (NIRS). The figures cover overseas nationals allocated a NINo for whatever reason i.e. the figures cover benefit/tax credit recipients as well as workers. All overseas nationals allocated a NINo are included, regardless of their length of stay in the UK.

The data in the profile is taken from the Workers Registration Scheme(WRS) and is updated quarterly.

The Workers Registration Scheme began in May 2004 and provides information supplied by citizens from eight of the countries who joined the European Union that month when they obtain a job in the UK.

Since the expansion of the European Union in May 2004, an increasing number of people from EU countries have come to work in Somerset. They have been attracted to Somerset because of local skill shortages especially in the care sector, tourism, pig farming and food preparation industries. Somerset has had relatively low unemployment rates over recent years and many local employers have been advertising in the EU for workers to fill skills gaps.

The report 'Ethnicity in Somerset - June 2004' provided in-depth analysis of ethnicity data from the 2001 Census. The Census still remains the most accurate and detailed source of information on ethnic origin, particularly at local (ward) level, but the Office for National Statistics has now produced experimental mid-year estimates of the ethnicity of the population in local authority areas. This report provides an update on the ethnic make-up of Somerset and its component Districts, compared to the picture in the South West region, and identifies changes since the 2001 Census.
