Equipment
There is a wide range of equipment available that can easily be used in your home to make life easier. These things could be a stair rail, raised toilet seating, equipment to help in the bath or shower or items to help prepare to eat food and drink.
You can buy equipment from local shops and suppliers. There are voluntary organisations and private providers who sell equipment for disabled people. Please search our services and products
If you feel it would be helpful, you can ask an occupational therapist to carry out an assessment and give you advice and information. This could include advice about equipment and alterations to the home to help you manage more easily.
Adaptations
If you would like information and advice about repairs and adaptations to your home, there are lots of organisations that can help you. Please search our find services section. Making some simple adaptations to your home can also make it easier for you or the person you care for.
Disabled Facilities Grant
You could get a grant from your council if you’re disabled and need to make changes to your home, for example to
- Widen doors and install ramps
- Improve access to rooms and facilities – for example, with stairlifts or a downstairs bathroom
- Provide a heating system suitable for your needs
- Adapt heating or lighting controls to make them easier to use
